"The Kindergartener and the Guardian
Something that really broke the dam open for me in songwriting is learning how to separate two very integral and distinct parts of my brain. I call one the Kindergartener,
and the other - the Guardian.
When approaching a blank canvas, or the beginnings of creative mode, it's very important for me to let the child, the messy Kindergartener, play and explore first. Let the child part of you lead. This can be free writing, or scatting, talking about anything, no rules, just fingerpainting. The Kindergartener holds the magic and soul of your song.
Only after the child has had its playtime in the sandbox do you bring in the Guardian.
The Guardian side of your brain is the adult, logical, puzzle solving side. The Guardian can then enter the sandbox, and analyze where the child's creation can be finessed and organized. Give the Guardian freedom to help finish the project, but as soon as you feel like the magic is getting lost, bring back the Kindergartener...
and neither one feels deprived, or unheard. The result is a song with a grand balance of chaos and structure. Creation is freedom!"
